Jewellery Care

I hope you love your jewels so much that you never want to take them off! But please take care to look after your silver treasures.

Silver will naturally darken and dull through wear over time, but try to avoid having them come into direct contact with any chemicals/lotions/ perfumes. There are acids within these things, even air and water, that can cause silver to tarnish.

When you're not wearing your jewellery, its best to keep it safe in the box or pouch you receive it in and when it becomes dirty, you can carefully use boiling water with washing up liquid and an old toothbrush to clean it up. I also recommend buying one of my silver polishing cloths to make it nice and shiney again.

Ever had a green finger?!

On a small handfull of aliens/people, solid sterling silver can sometimes cause a green mark to appear on their skin within the first few days of being worn.
In the UK, the jewellery industry is tightly regulated and The Shadowed Pearl is a registered jeweller with the London Goldsmiths Assay Office, who verifies the metal I use is 100% solid sterling silver, this is a legal requirement when pieces weigh over 7.78g.

So what causes the green tinge?
Sterling silver is 92.5% fine silver and 7.5% copper, so the stain is usually a result of the copper reacting with your particular skin. Whether it's the lotion you're using, sweat or just your body chemistry, it affects everyone differently, but the good news is the majority of people don't experience this at all. The staining is usually temporary and can be cleaned off with soap of water, once the mark has gone, you can start wearing your ring again and in most cases, the tinge doesn't return.

Another reason you may have a stain on your finger is because of the polish used when your ring was made. I use a few different various products to polish my silver jewels to a high mirror like shine and then sometimes to darken the recesses and details. I always soak the rings in an ultrasonic bath after polishing to remove any polish build up, but if any remains, this can make your skin appear stained. All you'll need to do is use warm soapy water and an old toothbrush to remove the excess polish.
